versiondog 8.0
Trailblazer for the Industrial IoT
Just one glance at versiondog 8.0 tells you that a lot has changed. But the new, flat, clean, look is only one of many improvements. A lot of the changes are small, but their cumulative effect is significant. For this release of its data management system, AUVESY has made performance and sustainability a priority. Clearing the way for the IIoT, while at the same time making the lives of maintenance departments easier right now. Improvements have been made in areas such as collaboration, change history and Open Platform Communications (OPC).
Even though not all the improvements are immediately obvious, they will still save time. Time that users can spend on core tasks. Performance improvement alone will make a big difference. Changes made in conjunction with the GUI redesign have made versiondog 8.0 faster. But that's not all. Check-In and Check-Out has also been speeded up in many cases. The new 64-bit comparator, for example, means that project size is now much less of factor with TIA Portal and Wonderware System Platform.
Some new features might well make a decisive difference to some production facilities that still haven't implemented versiondog. Collaboration has been made much easier by Multi-User Edit. Multiple users can now work on a project without worrying about the edited contents of the working directory being mistakenly overwritten by a Check-Out. Nobody wants the expense of losing work, especially with today's complex projects. Also new is the ability to trigger job runs via OPC. This communication protocol enables manufacturer-independent data exchange between automation devices and systems, one of the most important prerequisites for the IIoT.
"The pressure on industry to digitalize manufacturing processes is growing," says AUVESY CEO Dr. Tim Weckerle. "So much so, that in many cases, the purchase of versiondog is eligible for government assistance. That's something that tends to pique the interest of potential customers." In Germany, for example, there is state and federal stimulus available for small, medium-sized and large companies who want to increase the level of networking in their automated facilities, provided that robust IT security measures are taken.
For critical infrastructures (CRITIS), the food & beverage industry, pharmaceutical manufacturers, water treatment facilities and other regulated areas, it will undoubtedly be of interest that versiondog can now also show a history of changes made to component properties.
versiondog 8.0 also offers many more small improvements, a full list of which can be found in versiondog INFO. One thing that all the changes have in common is that they offer benefits that our customers have told us they want. "New features and improvements in versiondog are to a great extent developed and prioritized based on customer feedback," says Thorsten Lang, Head of Development at AUVESY. "To encourage that feedback, the roadmap is published in versiondog INFO, where we give an honest and open indication of which improvements are likely to be included in the next release, and which ones are not."
